What’s up horse people!?

Today’s review topic is the age-old question “What is the Best Fly Mask?” I have searched far and wide, and I have the answer for you!

It’s the Roma Stretch Buy Eye Saver! If you haven’t given this fly mask a try, you need to stop what you’re doing right now, and AMAZON PRIME it! There are about a million reasons why this is the BEST FLY MASK on the planet.

Top Five Reasons Roma Bug Eye Saver is the Best Fly Mask

  1. It stays on.
  2. It doesn’t rub holes in your horse’s face.
  3. It doesn’t squish the eyes.
  4. It’s easy to clean.
  5. You can see your horse’s eyes through the mesh!

The Roma Stretch Bug Eye Saver Fly Mask Stay on

This fly mask stays on! I will mention that I have a very important hack to make is stay on though! You have to cut the mesh netting ears off of the mask. I found that when I left the ears on the mask, my horse was able to rub the whole mask off on a tree. I think that the netting on the ears is rough enough to catch and aid in the escape process. Once I cut the ears off of the mask, I stopped having to hunt for it in the pasture!

Another Slight Modification to the Bug Eye Saver!

In addition to cutting the ear net pieces off of the mask, I also cut a forelock hole in the front of it. I hate when fly masks squish a beautiful forelock down and then it gets all gross and matted. I want my horse’s forelock to breathe and flow! If your horse has a generous forelock, get a pair of scissors and cut a hole for it. I haven’t found this procedure to degrade the fly mask in any way. It doesn’t cause it to tear or turn into a bigger hole.

Get rid of the ear netting!

The Roma Stretch Buy Eye Saver Doesn’t Rub!

I have VERY sensitive thin-skinned horses, and this mask doesn’t leave a rub! I can leave it on 24-hours a day throughout the spring/summer/fall and it will not leave a rub mark on my horse. I have been through the pains of alternating masks and switching them out daily, or sometimes twice daily! I’ve sewn sheepskin patches into fly masks in efforts to protect my horse from rubs. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on different shaped fly masks, so that rub marks could heal, while still keeping eyes protected. All of that ended when I found the best fly mask: The Roma Stretch Buy Eye Saver!

The Bug Eye Saver is made of stretchy soft material. It’s like one of those horse slinkies or jammies. I was worried it would be hot, but the horses are never sweaty underneath. I actually think the eye panels have really good ventilation. One of my horses used to always have sweaty face marks when I took off his old fly mask. I can’t imagine that would be comfortable. I no longer feel guilty about leaving a fly mask on him in the hot weather!

It Doesn’t Squish the Eyes!

I’ve used so many masks that seem to squish the horse’s eyeballs! How are you protecting the eyes at the same time you’re squishing them?? Many of the “traditional” fly masks are awful, because they’re squish right down on the poor horse’s eyeballs. It might be a product of trying to make the mask tight enough to stay on, but whatever the cause, it has to be uncomfortable. This mask is tight, but soft, and the large bug eye panels give the horses plenty of eyeball room! No more sad rubbed off eye lashes! Don’t accept a fly mask that rubs your horse’s eye lashes off.

This is the Best Fly Mask Because it’s Easy to Clean!

Whenever I go to the barn, as soon as I halter my horse, I take his mask off. After tying him up for grooming/tacking, I will quickly take the mask to the water horse and spray it off. I will wring it out and spray it until it the water runs clear. Wring it out really good, and hang it in a sunny location. It will be dry in a half hour! You can do this weekly or as often as you like.

It Protects Against Gnats Too!

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly larger netting holes. This fly mask WILL keep gnats out. My mare had a terrible gnat allergy when we lived in North Carolina, and if she didn’t have her mask on for even an hour, her eyes would start to puff up and water! After trying tons of other masks, this one was a godsend.

You Can See The Horses’s Eyes Through The Mask

My absolute FAVORITE thing about the Roma Bug Eye mask is that you can SEE YOUR HORSES EYES THROUGH IT! Who has gone to the barn to take off a fly mask only to find totally jacked up, boogery, puffy, painful eyes?? Have you had to pay for a stable manager or barn owner to put on and take off a mask daily or multiple times a day? Have you worried that your horse’s eyes aren’t getting looked at during the day? I have, and it’s not fun. I don’t want my horse’s eyes to be a mystery until somebody unveils them from their fly mask.

You can see very clearly through this fly mask’s eye panels. If your horse has a problem going on, somebody is going to notice it. Whether you’re the one taking care of your horse or you board at a stable, you need your horse’s eyes to be very clearly visible. This is especially important for horses with chronic eye issues. You don’t want to put on and take off a fly mask multiple times a day, just to see what’s going on under there. With the Roma Fly Mask, you can just see through it easily.

Clear visibility to see the eyes.
fits easily under a halter too!

Use it in The Trailer Too!

I can’t say enough wonderful things about this fly mask. If you’re wondering what the best fly mask is, look no further than the Roma Stretch Buy Eye Saver. It solved a lot of problems for me during a summer of many eye issues and vet calls. I find that they last a couple of seasons, and that’s with 24/7 use during the buggy times of the year. I even use them in the trailer to protect my horse’s eyes from any shavings/wind or debris that could be flying around. If you like this fly mask, let me know in the comments. If you think you have a better fly mask than this, I also want to know, so I can check it out! I doubt I will be switching to anything else anytime soon though…

  1. I started using this fly mask when my horse developed a terrible eye abscess resulting from an injury. This mask was easy to put on and didn’t interfere with the infected eye. It is lightweight, comfortable and rinses out and dries quickly.

    1. I’m so glad the Roma Bug Eye mask helped when Zia was recovering from that awful eye injury!
