Last year, I bought a pair of Cavallo Simple Boots for my horse Bamboozal. Bamboozal is an older Morgan gelding, and he has always had really tough strong bare hooves. That being said, he’s a flat lander from Florida, and we were moving cross-country from North Carolina to Idaho.
Cavallo Simple Boots for Extra Support and Protection
We planned on horse camping for the two-week long trek, and I knew we were going to encounter a lot of variety in terrain. Additionally, he was going to have to spend some long days in the trailer, 8, 10 and even 12 hours some days. For a 24-year-old semi-arthritic horse, that’s pretty tough, especially considering he was going to have to stay in a stall-sized area at each of the campgrounds, so I wanted to help him as much as possible.
I have previous experience in booting for distance riding, but I didn’t want a boot that I was going to have to fuss with a lot. My other horses already have the “high performance” style boots. It was really important for me to have something easy that was going to provide extra support and protection for my older horse.
I did a ton of research and settled on the Cavallo Simple Boot. After measuring his hoof, I ordered a pair. Other than initially scruffing up his fetlock hair (he’s very furry), which was solved by a few of my old socks, they have been absolutely perfect!
Cavallo Simple Boots for Ease of Use
They’re super easy to put on and take off. Everything is velcro. They have aggressive tread and a nice breakover. I expected them to perform and protect his hooves from rocky or hard terrain, but they totally surpassed my expectations.
If you have a barefoot horse, and you’ve never used boots, I urge you to get a pair. The difference is visible. Bamboozal floats in these boots. You can feel the difference under saddle too. He is so comfortable and really steps out in these boots. Even if he didn’t look stiff or off without them, seeing him in them has encouraged me to use them more often. These are now one of my favorite boots! They look a little clunky, but don’t be fooled! They help my senior gelding feel as light as air!
On Trail Testing of The Cavallo Simple Boot
I’ve added a little video of a recent camping trip to Castle Rocks State Park in Almo, Idaho. My mom was visiting from Florida and she had a great time riding Bamboozal. He was even leaving younger horses in the dust! Since my initial pair of Cavallo Simple Boots, I have purchased an additional pair of the Cavallo ELBs or Entry Level Boots, so he has a set of four. Stay tuned for a review of the ELBs!
